About furniture and what to look for in a piece Many people cannot tell the difference between a veneered and solid wood piece of furniture and automatically think solid wood is superior. There are many examples throughout history of magificent veneered furniture. The use of veneer allows exotic and rare timbers to be used and the base material (chipboard or MDF) allows for greater dimensional stability, for instance in large table tops. The important thing is to have solid wood edges (lippings) that take dents without the veneer exposing the core material. The importance of finish A wood finish both protects and visually enhances the piece and should be appropriate to the timber and the use of the piece. Some woods take an oil well, other woods take a lac q uer be t ter. Jeremy Broun tends to avoid using waxes which although adding a romantic smell to the piece , can attract dirt in open grained timbers (such as ash) and make future repairs difficult. solid wood lippings protect veneered work What is good design A piece of furniture by definition has to fulfil a practical function. What the critics say Since 1974. Jeremy Broun has shown his innovative furniture at major British exhibitions. From 1980 to the early Millennium His work was been included in The Crafts Council Index of Selected Makers (around 26 furniture designers re-defining the boundaries of their craft). This brought his furniture to the attention of craft journalists, magazine editors and exhibition curators. Jeremy Broun has been building guitrs since he was seventeen including jumbo acoustics, selmer style, flamenco and his own ecoustic synthesised guitatr Guitar making & playing Jez Broun made his first guitar at the age of 17 and to date has made 21 guitars. He is a self-taught guitarist and performs on the streets of his home city Bath and occasionally as part of Jezzfusion band at local (Bath) venues. About Jeremy Broun Jeremy's was educated at Chippenham Grammar School and Abbotsholme Independent Progressive school. It was while at Abbotsholme his talent was triggered by a brilliant woodwork teacher - Howard Orme). He made an acoustic guitar in a weekend when he was 17, working throughout the nights without sleep. Today he performs on guitars that he builds and also teaches guitar making and has written a book called Guitar Making Art . He has exhibited and lectured extensively in the UK and also in Ireland, Finland and the USA. Over three decades his work was included in the Crafts Council Index of Selected Makers. A cabinet sold at the first auction of living makers' work at Sotheby's. His numerous awards include a Churchill Travel Scholarship to Finland, Sweden & Italy, The Furniture Makers Company 'Ambrose Heal Award' and The Professional Woodworker of the Year Award. as a film maker he set up Thinking Hand Video in 1988 and has won awards and sponsorship. John Makepeace OBE, David Pearce, Jeremy Broun and Andrew Varah at the Irish Create 2005 event. His passion is rooted in Education and he has an extensive and varied teaching experience . In recent years Jeremy has offered informal work experience in film making, furniture design and vehicle restoration to young people. Moving tradition on As a reaction to a highly traditional training in cabinetry at the legendary Shoreditch College and as a survival strategy whilst teaching woodwok at a tough London secondary school, Jeremy Broun started creating new ideas to stimulate the pupils.
