THE ALAN PETERS ONLINE FURNITURE AWARD 2026 – GUIDELINES & ENTRY FORM

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY & CREATE A FOLDER BEARING YOUR FULL NAME. ONCE COMPLETE, SEND THIS FOLDER (INCLUDING ALL DOCUMENTS & ENTRY FORM) VIA WE TRANSFER – www.wetransfer.com – to jezbroun@gmail.com

Please also ensure to watch the AWARD ENTRY GUIDELINES 2026 video

Applications are invited from any woodworker who is a resident citizen of The British Isles (which includes Ireland), over 18 years of age, with an enthusiasm and talent for contemporary furniture making. Entrants can submit up to two original pieces of furniture – handmade, primarily out of wood – which in some way echoes Alan Peters’ philosophy. Work will be judged on the following criteria: craftsmanship; originality of design (the idea); aesthetics; use of material; functionality.

How to enter

Follow the instructions below and FILL IN THIS DOCUMENT – do not convert to PDF format

  1. The piece of furniture must be original and designed and made solely by the applicant within the past two years.

  2. Submit six high resolution JPEG images – approx. 3MB each – and at least one high resolution MP4 video – max. 30 seconds long – for each entry – up to a maximum of three clips.

  3. One of the images should show the piece under construction in the workspace.

  4. Return form APP and pay the £20 entry fee – max. two entries – up until and no later than 31 July 2026.

  5. Please familiarise yourself with the work of the late Alan Peters OBE. A 64-page e-book – Alan Peters – The Makers Maker – is available, and while not compulsory reading, it’ll help you to better understand the award.

  6. The emphasis is on ‘hand’ skill, which may include some machining. The use of CNC, where it adds to the design and minimises repetition, but does not contribute to more than 15% of the overall piece, is permitted.

  7. Provide a statement that describes you and your influences, future aspirations, and any relevant information about you as a woodworker – max. 150 words.

  8. Give your piece a title and description. If there’s hidden joints, ensure to describe them – max.150 words.

  9. Image captions: give brief numbered descriptions of each photo in the space provided on the entry form.

  10. If short-listed, you’ll be asked to engage in a short Zoom interview for the online award.

Still image requirements

The selection is based on photographs, videos and succinct descriptions. Six high resolution images of the completed piece are required – minimum file size is 3MB, up to a max. of 5MB. You may be able to take photos using a mobile phone. A professional studio background is not required, but the piece should be set against as clear a background as possible. Your images should be well lit and clearly defined, including major elevations and close-up details of interesting/difficult/innovative features, conveying how the piece is made. A chair will require a side elevation. It’s essential you strictly reference each image: SURNAME/01. One of the images should show the piece being made in your workshop/workspace.

Video clip requirements

Use a mobile phone to take at least one high resolution video – up to a max. of four, and each up to 30 seconds long – in MP4 format and portrait (vertical) mode. If you’re submitting a chair, please show a shot of someone sitting in it. When shooting video, move the camera device slowly, so that the video can be frozen at any point by the judges. This is very important as rapid motion results in a blurred still/freeze frame. Submitting a clear video clip enhances your chances of being selected if the still images leave any doubts in the judges’ minds. Ask someone else to help video your piece if required.
